Counting Ants 1-2-3

This beginning reader book uses colorful ants to introduce the numbers one to ten. A yummy cake sits one the left side of each page and soon the first ant is on the cake, then two, three, etc. Soon young children will be counting ant one to ten. Large type, sight words, and short sentences will engage readers.

This new series of counting books "All About Counting Bugs 1-2-3" is not particularly interesting and unlikely to hold the attention of readers. The illustration, in this case what looks like ants in a variety of solid colors climbing up a three tier cake is repeated on every spread and all that happens is that one more ant is added. The text simply states the obvious—four ants and the Arabic numeral 4. And so it goes all the way from one to ten. Since ants do vary in size and color and work cooperatively, it might have been interesting to demonstrate that fact and even introduce a fact or two about ants that kids would remember. It is not a particularly impressive introduction to counting. The closing page contains references to two older books, websites, and an index. This book is designated guided reading level "A" with the word count of twenty., Children's Literature
