Halloween colors seem to be orange and black—orange perhaps for the fruits, vegetables, and leaves that turn color in the fall and black for the things that go bump in the night. Landau begins with a Words to Know section which primes readers for what is ahead. The definitions are supported with photographs so it should be pretty clear what the words mean. Readers learn that on October 31 it is time to dress up in a costume and have fun and part of that fun is treat or treating with friends. She then gives a bit of history about the holiday and who would have thought that scary faces were originally carved on turnips. Now we use pumpkins to create jack-o-lanterns. There may be parades, hayrides, haunted houses to visit, and more. The issues of too much candy seems like a bit of a preaching thrown into an otherwise straightforward presentation about the holiday. The closing pages have a detailed recipe for hand and eyeball punch, a list of several more books and web sites, and an index., Children's Literature
