This series is a well-balanced introduction for solving math word problems. Fifteen to 20 word problem scenarios are individually presented. Each book identifies clue words, problem solving tips, and lays out the steps for problem solving. Key parts of the math process are color coded and have accompanying picture clues to help the nonreader or visual learner. Many problems use models, picture drawing, grouping, and estimating. The illustrations are colorful and kid friendly without being childish or distracting. Internet addresses are included for additional practice, and the publisher offers free online worksheets. There are many titles that explain math concepts, but there are few with as many diverse examples displayed in simple terms and with a focus on the key vocabulary clue words.
