Large photographs of baby turtles, otters, and frogs will entice young readers to learn more about these interesting animals. In this nonfiction text in the Natures Baby Animals series, simple sentences first describe the difference between lakes and ponds. A paragraph tells about each of the animals and photographs shows the baby animal, both alone and with its mother. The animals include a capybara (the biggest rodent in the world), a mallard duck, a hippo, a frog, a turtle, a mute swan, a river otter, and a blue heron. The facts about each animal include the special ways the animals live and stay safe in ponds and lakes. Different information is given about each animal; for example, we find out what the ducks eat and how they find their food, while in the paragraph about the turtle, we find out about how turtles live in the water but their food is not mentioned. A table of contents is included, and a Words to Know page lists four words with their definitions and photos. There are pages with a bibliography, websites, and an index. This would be a good science supplemental text, and the simple sentences would be appropriate for beginning readers., Children's Literature
