I have reviewed many step-by-step drawing books, but this one is unusual in that its an instructional book for both drawing and writing a story. Drawing and writing share a common approach, starting with either simple shapes or simple ideas. This book shows how to complete a drawing in four steps. Fewer than four steps might not be very helpful because it would not provide enough information. The instructions begin with a simple contour line in the shape of the animal being drawn. Detail is added in the next two steps and color in the last. Thirty different animals are featured including pets, wild animals, farm animals and marine life. The images are very cartoon-like and kid-friendly. The second part of the book includes instructions on how to write a story. The first step is to think about the animal in the drawing and consider the questions who, what, when, where, when and how. The second step is writing the story. The third step is editing and the fourth step is proofreading. The final step is to construct a book for the images and words. Brief instructions are provided for five different book formats. The grand finale is a short story including some of the animals that were drawn for the four step instructions., Children's Literature
