Green and Clean Energy
Conventional energy sources such as oil and coal will not last forever, and they pose a threat to our earth through polluting and causing climate change. Author Sherri Mabry Gordon explores different types of energy, such as wind and solar, explaining how they work and what their advantages are. She also outlines ways kids can save energy and use it more wisely.

Whether it is turning off entertainment devices when they are not being used, printing a report on both sides of the paper, or reusing batteries, environmentally-conscious students will pick up lots of information and advice in this text on green energy. Chapters tackled the basics of coal and oil (The Energy Buzz); global warming and the different types of power (Things are Heating Up); Energy Star, green power and saving energy in the home (Home, Green Home), the cost of gas and other types of fuel, and the future of cars (Street Smart); school programs that promote green ideas (Knowledge is Power); sustainable communities like Greensburg, Kansas (Sustainable Communities); and what the future holds (Red, White and Green! Green Power and the Future of America). Gordon works hard at incorporating stories of families and people dedicated to making a difference, such as a couple in Ohio who built a house with renewable materials that was energy efficient. Like other books from Enslows Green in Focus series, the book is not meant to be read sequentially. It is not perfect—there is a misidentification about structural insulated panels—and the book veers between what kids can reasonably do and what is more appropriate for adults, especially in the home-building chapter. The best case for purchase is that teachers can gather ideas or incorporate certain chapters in lessons about environmental policy and day-to-day changes. It is part of the Green Issues in Focus series., Children's Literature
