Nifty Thrifty Sports Crafts

Readers create ten crafts that have to do with their favorite sports and teams. Readers learn how to make everything from sporty frames to easy-to-play games using inexpensive materials found at home or in the classroom. They'll make a bowling game, a jump rope, or a golf business cardholder.

Ten simple but rather ordinary crafts in each book use readily available materials. Both titles begin with a brief introduction to the topic and conclude with a few suggestions for additional reading, a couple of Internet addresses, and a one-page index. The projects in Sports Crafts include how to decorate a sports water bottle with permanent markers and how to decorate a paper plate to make a baseball fan. One clever idea is the jump rope fashioned from colored rubber bands and ribbons. In Music Crafts, rhythm blocks made from cereal boxes wrapped in sandpaper, a rainstick made from a paper-towel roll, rice, and aluminum foil, and a pie pan transformed into a tambourine are featured. Appropriate safety cautions are added to some directions. The clear and attractive photos and drawings and the easy reading level will appeal to young crafters., School Library Journal August 2007
