This People to Know Today series title is an enjoyable introduction to Johansson that avoids a gossipy, tabloid tone. After general background on family and childhood, including acting lessons and early disappointments, the chapters detail Johansson's progress from stage to screen. Each of her movie roles, in North, The Horse Whisperer, Ghost WorId, Lost in Translation, and other films, is described, and critics' responses, both picks and pans, are woven in throughout. Though many of her films are intended for adult audiences, her experiences afford an interesting glimpse into Hollywood and the film industry, including celebrity challenges: loneliness and homesickness while on location; gaining fame and financial success while losing privacy. Film-related concepts and terms (e.g., method acting, film noir) are well defined, and readers will appreciate Johansson's views, expressed in direct quotes on subjects such as beauty (confidence, nor "ultra-thinness," is the best resource, she says). Interspersed color photos include movie stills, and a chronology and filmography (through 2010). chapter notes, and suggested resources add further information., Booklist June 1 & 15, 2011
