Air is our most important resource, yet it is in danger from pollution and global warming. Author Stephen Feinstein explains threats to air quality worldwide and explains what readers can do to help preserve and protect this precious resource.

In this look at the problems around air pollution, students may get more information than they know how to handle. Feinstein starts with a compelling anecdote about the worst U.S. smog disaster in Donora, PA that killed around a hundred people and injured thousands, some permanently. Students will read about the Earths atmosphere, the history of air pollution, air pollution and global warming, indoor air quality, the automobile and air pollution, air quality and public health and what they can do to help. It gets bogged down when discussing the layers of the atmosphere, the Kyoto protocol and cap and trade, and public health issues. Sidebars tackle brown clouds, tobacco smoke, the safety of hydrogen, and bicycle safety. While Feinstein writes clearly and tries to make the ideas vivid, and sidebars and subheads break up the text, even those interested in the main ideas may find their attention drifting. It is part of the Green Issues in Focus series from Enslow Publishers, and reiterates many of the themes found in Green and Clean Energy. The best case for introducing into a library would be for those who find a dearth of reference books on green issues., Children's Literature
