Staying in Touch in the Past, Present, and Future

Our ways of communicating have changed a lot over the last century. Early televisions and telephones look strange to us now. In another fifty years, who knows how we might stay in touch? Using vintage historical photographs and colorful, humorous drawings, this book helps readers understand the past, change over time, and stimulates their imagination about the future.

* Reviews *

This book is part of the Imagining the Future series. Each spread features a particular form of communication: television, radio, newspapers, telephone, telegraph, mail, billboards, and visiting. One small paragraph explains something about the form of communication in the past. (For example, At one time, home telephones looked like big boxes on the wall.) Then, another small paragraph explains something about communication today. (e.g., Today, people can record shows and play games on their televisions.) The majority of the text suggests possibilities for future communication and encourages readers to think about circumstances if those ideas become reality. One passage asks: Do you wonder what newspapers might be like many years from now? Will they still be made of paper? What if the pictures came to life? You could watch your favorite sports star run across the page. If a reader is looking for past or current information about communication, this is not the right book. However, if a reader wants to speculate about future possibilities, this is a fun place to start., Children's Literature
