The Great Thinker

Aristotle's work was groundbreaking in many areas. Even when he was not the first person to consider certain studies, he was the first to write about several of them. Aristotle's contributions to the development of Greek and later science were monumental. He advanced factual knowledge about fields like biology and zoology. He framed questions and suggested approaches that were built upon for centuries afterward.

Great Minds of Ancient Science and Math series. These dry but useful biographies explain their subjects' contributions during their own times, then discuss the men's later influencesor limitations, as with Euclidian geometry. Carefully documented facts are distinguished from legend and augmented with contextual material, such as information about Socrates in Plato and Aristotle. Captioned photos and a few diagrams illustrate the texts; brief activity sections are appended. Reading list, timeline, websites. Glos., ind., The Horn Book Guide Spring 2011
