Many people who are blind learn to read using a sixty-three combination code called Braille. This allows them to read everything from favorite books to signs and maps. People also use this code to write. Readers learn stories of real children living with blindness and information about the helpers, tools, and technology that allow blind people to experience the world. As part of the Overcoming Barriers series, readers will be introduced to Braille, including the history of Braille, how it was developed, and how it is used. A brief touch on historical individuals such as Louis Braille and Helen Keller are included. Each of the four books within the series uses larger text and color pictures, along with fact boxes to chunk text and make reading more accessible for elementary-aged children. Information is balanced with narrative to maximize reader engagement. A short glossary and index along with a limited list of resources for readers to learn more are included. Children will find this a useful resource as they research Braille and learn how some peers overcome challenges in a positive way., Children's Literature
